The JulieMango Way — Set up. Personalise. Build. Automate. Connect.
🥭 Built by the JulieMango.ai Team of Agents
Welcome to Claude Made Simple — the JulieMango guide to turning Claude into the engine room of your small business. No jargon, no rabbit holes, no technical skills needed. Whether this is your first time opening Claude or you've been poking at it without ever unlocking the good stuff, this playbook walks you through every feature with checklists and frameworks you can put to work today.
We're the team behind the JulieMango marketplace — 200+ ready-made AI agents and a 2,264-skill library for small businesses, creators and solopreneurs. We set Claude up for people every single day; this is everything we've learned, in one place.
🗺️
How this playbook flows
We've arranged this the way we onboard our own customers — five stages, each building on the last:
Stage
Chapters
What you'll walk away with
🌱 Set Up
1. Getting Started
An account, the right plan, and your bearings
🥭 Prompt
2. The RIPE Method
Prompts that get expert answers, not Google answers
🎨 Personalise
3. Custom Instructions · 4. Research & Vision
A Claude that knows you, plus live research superpowers
🏗️ Build
5. Artifacts · 6. Projects
Working mini-apps and dedicated AI workspaces
⚡ Automate & Connect
7. Skills · 8. Connectors · 9. The Full Stack
Repeatable automations plugged into your real tools
💡 How to use it: Work through the stages in order — each chapter ends with a checklist (they're tickable right here in this page) so you always know what "done" looks like. You don't have to finish in one sitting. By the end you'll have a fully customised Claude setup that runs the way your business runs. And whenever a chapter mentions agents or skills, remember: you can build your own from scratch, or grab a ready-made one off The Shelf and skip the setup entirely.

🥭 Mango Tip: Start on the free plan. If you smack into the usage limits within your first week, that's your upgrade signal. In our experience the shift really happens when you've got a little skin in the game — a paid plan makes you treat Claude like a tool instead of a toy. (And if limits are biting, simple habits stretch them further — shorter chats, one topic per conversation, and letting a skill do the repetitive heavy lifting.)
The Prompt Bar — centre of the screen. This is where you talk to Claude.
Model Selector — choose your engine: Sonnet → everyday tasks (fast, reliable) · Opus → ambitious, complex work (deeper reasoning).
The + Button — extra features like web search, file uploads, and more.
Left Sidebar — your navigation hub: create new chats, browse past conversations, access Projects, Artifacts, and more.
Chat Management — click into any past chat to ⭐ star it (pins it to the top), ✏️ rename it, or 📁 add it to a project.
🥭
Stage Two — Prompt
2. The RIPE Method
⚠️ If you only read one chapter, make it this one. Claude is only as good as what you feed it. Most people type into AI the way they type into Google — and they get Google-level answers back. At JulieMango we teach every customer the same four-part structure before anything else. We call it RIPE — because a prompt, like a mango, is only worth picking when it's ready.
❌ The Unripe Prompt
"How do I go viral on social media?"
What you get back: generic advice about being consistent, using hashtags and posting reels. Stuff you could find in any blog post. You'd spend twenty minutes trying to make it useful.
✅ The RIPE Prompt
Letter
Stands for
Ask yourself
R
Result
What do you actually want? Not vague — specific.
I
Information
Who are you? What's your situation? What have you tried? What are your constraints?
P
Process
What specifically should Claude do with all of this?
E
Exact format
How should the answer arrive? Bullets? A table? Three options with one-line explanations?
A RIPE prompt in the wild:
Result: I want to attract small business owners who are already making
money but feel overwhelmed running everything by themselves. I'm not trying
to get famous — I want the right people finding me and reaching out about
working together.
Information: I run a coaching business doing about £12K/month. I post on
Instagram and LinkedIn but I get generic engagement — likes from people who
will never buy. I've tried posting tips and motivational content. It hasn't
translated to clients. I have about 45 minutes a day to spend on this.
Process: Identify the specific type of content that attracts buyers
rather than followers for a service-based business. Explain why that content
works differently than content designed for reach.
Exact format: Give me 3 content angles with a one-sentence explanation of
why each one attracts buyers specifically. No generic advice about
consistency or hashtags.
Your RIPE Checklist
Write your first RIPE prompt (use a real problem you're facing right now)
Compare the output to a "lazy" version of the same question
Practise iteration — ask follow-ups like "Give me 6 more variations of #2"
Keep talking to the model until you get what you actually want (never settle for the first response)
🥭 Mango Tip: Don't be shy about having long conversations with Claude. Our favourite unlock is voice typing — brain-dumping your context out loud beats slowly typing it every time, and tools that transcribe straight into the prompt bar (WisprFlow and friends) make talking to AI feel like briefing a colleague. The more information you pour in, the riper the answer.
🎨
Stage Three — Personalise
We teach personalisation before research tools — a Claude that knows who you are makes every other feature sharper.
3. Custom Instructions & Your AI Operating System
⭐ This is where Claude transforms from a generic chatbot into your AI assistant. Custom instructions are permanent rules Claude follows in every single conversation. Set them once, and Claude knows who you are, how you work, and what you expect — forever.
What Are Custom Instructions?
A set of preferences and context Claude reads every time you start a new conversation. No more re-explaining yourself. No more generic responses.
How to Set Them
Click your profile picture (bottom left corner)
Go to Settings
Find the Personal Preferences box under General
Paste in your custom instructions
Hit Save Changes
🧠 Build Your AI Operating System
This framework puts you in the top 1% of AI users — most people never do it. Fill out five sections that teach Claude exactly who you are and how to work with you.
Section 1 — Identity: who you are. Your name, your business (or job), what you do, who you serve. The foundation.
Your name
Your business or role
What you do day-to-day
Who your clients/audience/team are
Your industry and niche
Section 2 — Communication style: how you want AI to talk to you. Direct and no-fluff? Fun and casual? Professional? Emoji-heavy? This shapes every response.
Your preferred tone (direct, casual, professional…)
Response length preference (short and punchy vs. detailed)
How you want Claude to push back on or challenge your ideas
Section 3 — Goals & priorities: what you're focused on right now. AI works best when it knows what you're working toward.
Your top 1–3 business/career goals right now
Current projects or initiatives
Key metrics you're tracking
What "winning" looks like this quarter
Section 4 — Daily schedule & non-negotiables: your time structure. When Claude plans or strategises for you, it needs your real availability.
Your typical daily schedule
Deep work hours (when you don't want to be disturbed)
Meeting days and times
Non-negotiable blocks (gym, family, school run…)
Hours per day you dedicate to specific tasks
Section 5 — Avoidances: what you never want to see. Guardrails matter as much as instructions.
Topics or approaches you don't want
Response styles that annoy you ("too generic," "too long," "too many caveats")
Specific phrases or patterns to avoid
Any ethical, legal, or brand boundaries
Your AI Operating System Checklist
Fill out all 5 sections (15–20 minutes — worth every one)
Paste it into Claude's Custom Instructions
Hit Save Changes
Test it — start a new chat and ask Claude something about your business
Refine it over the next week as you notice gaps
🥭 Mango Tip: Treat this as a living document. Update it whenever your goals, schedule or priorities change — the more accurate it is, the better Claude performs. Do it once and it changes everything from the very first conversation. (Our Done For You customers get this written for them on their audit call — it's that important.)
4. Research & Vision
🌐 Web Search
Web search turns Claude from a text generator into a real-time research and analysis tool. It pulls live, current information from the internet — accurate, up-to-date answers instead of stale training data.
How to Enable It
Click the + button in the prompt bar
Click Web Search (it turns blue when active)
Keep it on by default for the most accurate responses
I run a high-ticket AI business coaching offer targeting small business
owners doing £10-75K/month. Use web search to research [Competitor Name]'s
coaching offer, content strategy, and sales funnel. Identify their main
offer and price point, their content strategy, their sales language and
positioning, and any gaps or underserved angles I could fill.
What you get: a complete competitive analysis pulled from live web data — pricing, strategy, positioning, and the gaps you can exploit. In seconds.
👁️ Vision
Claude can see and analyse images — screenshots, photos, documents, designs, anything visual. Upload an image and Claude will understand it and give you feedback.
Vision Use Cases
Screenshot your website → get conversion optimisation feedback
Upload a thumbnail → get click-through-rate improvement suggestions
Photo of a whiteboard → have Claude organise and digitise your notes
Upload a design mockup → get UX/UI feedback
Photo of a document → have Claude extract and summarise the content
How to Use Vision
Click the + button in the prompt bar
Select Add files or photos
Upload your image
Write a prompt that tells Claude what you want analysed
🥭 Mango Tip: Don't just say "give me feedback." Use the RIPE method even with images — the more information you attach to the picture, the better the analysis.
🏗️
Stage Four — Build
5. Artifacts
This is the feature that blows people's minds. Ask Claude to build you a fully working tool — a calculator, a dashboard, a form, an interactive document — and it creates it right there in the conversation.
What Are Artifacts?
Interactive, shareable mini-apps that Claude builds for you from a simple description. You describe what you need, Claude builds it, and you can publish it with a shareable link.
What You Can Build
ROI calculators for your clients
Interactive dashboards
Lead capture forms
Flashcard study tools
Data visualisations
Prototype apps and websites
Pricing calculators
Interactive quizzes
Project planning tools
How to Create One
Open a new chat (use Opus for best results with artifacts)
Describe what you want in detail (inputs, outputs, design)
Claude opens a new panel and builds it live
Test it and request changes if needed
Publish it → click the share button in the upper right corner → copy the public link
An artifact prompt worth stealing — the ROI calculator:
Build me an interactive ROI calculator for business owners who are
considering AI automation in their business.
Inputs: their hourly rate, hours per week spent on manual/repetitive
tasks, number of weeks they work per year.
Outputs: annual cost of those manual tasks, estimated time saved,
estimated annual savings, and a simple ROI metric if they invested
£4K in an automation setup.
Make it clean, professional, and make the value obvious at a glance.
A tool like this takes Claude seconds to produce — and it's exactly the kind of thing that used to need a developer and a week.
Your Artifacts Checklist
Build your first artifact (start with something useful for your business)
Test it with real inputs
Publish it and grab the shareable link
Share it with a client, your audience, or your team
🥭 Mango Tip: Artifacts are incredible for lead magnets and client-facing tools. Build a free calculator or assessment, publish it, and share the link on social media. It's a custom tool built in five minutes that would've taken a developer days.
6. Projects
📂 If custom instructions are your personal layer, projects are your workspace layer. Each project is a dedicated container with its own knowledge base and instructions — perfect for different businesses, departments, or areas of your life.
What Are Projects?
Dedicated workspaces inside Claude with permanent context. Create a project, upload documents, set project-specific instructions — and every conversation inside it starts with Claude already knowing everything it needs to know.
Why Projects Are Powerful
Your personal custom instructions (AI Operating System) are always running in the background
Each project adds its own layer of context on top
Claude gets both your personal preferences and the specific project knowledge
No more re-explaining context at the start of every conversation
How to Create a Project
Open the sidebar (top left)
Click Projects
Hit New Project
Name it (e.g. "Client Onboarding," "Newsletter," "Marketing Strategy")
Sources: upload from device, Google Drive, or GitHub
You can use up to 100% of the project capacity — load it up
Ideas for project files:
Brand voice guidelines
Content templates and formulas
Client info and personas
SOPs and processes
Analytics and data exports
Terms of service / legal docs
Past proposals or deliverables
Meeting notes and transcripts
Competitor research
Set Project Instructions
Click into the Instructions section of your project
Write specific instructions that reference your uploaded files
Tell Claude how to behave inside this project specifically
Example project instructions:
"When creating any script, outline, or content brief, always reference
the uploaded brand guidelines and intro formula before writing. Match the
voice, positioning, and content rules exactly as described in the
documents. Never produce content that contradicts the brand voice guide."
Personal Development — learning goals + course notes + reading lists
🥭 Mango Tip: Create a project for each major area of your business or life. When you sit down to work, open the relevant project and Claude is instantly up to speed — no context-setting needed. This is what separates casual AI users from people who genuinely run parts of their business through it.
⚡
Stage Five — Automate & Connect
7. Skills
⚡ Skills are where Claude goes from assistant to automation machine. Our rule at JulieMango: if you do something more than twice, it should be a skill. Period.
What Are Skills?
Reusable instruction sets that teach Claude how to perform a specific task the exact same way every time. Think of them as SOPs for your AI — train it once, and it just handles it from there.
Skills vs. Projects — What's the Difference?
Projects
Skills
Purpose
Hold your knowledge and context
Execute specific tasks
Think of it as
The filing cabinet
The instruction manual
Contains
Documents, files, instructions
Step-by-step processes with examples
Scope
Workspace-level
Account-wide (works anywhere)
They work together: projects have the knowledge, skills have the process.
How to Create a Skill
Open the sidebar
Click Customise (under the search tab)
Go to the Skills tab
Hit the + button
Select Create with Claude (let Claude build the skill for you)
The Skill Creation Process
Tell Claude what the skill should do
Answer its questions about inputs, outputs, and format
Review the test output — does it match what you want?
Set an activation command (e.g. "proposal," "brief," "invoice")
Click Copy to Your Skills to install it
Skill ideas for your business:
Client Proposals — input client name + details → get a formatted, branded proposal
Content Briefs — input a topic → get a full content brief in your format
Email Responses — input the situation → get a drafted response in your voice
Weekly Reports — input your metrics → get a formatted report
Meeting Summaries — input notes → get a structured summary with action items
Social Media Posts — input an idea → get a polished post in your brand voice
Invoice Generation — input client + services → get a professional invoice
Client Onboarding Emails — input new client info → get a welcome sequence
🥭 Don't want to build from scratch? This is literally what JulieMango is for. The Shelf holds 200+ ready-made agents across twelve categories — content, sales, marketing, strategy, finance — plus a 2,264-skill library. Browse, pick, download, done. No setup, no confusion.
Your Skills Checklist
Identify 3 tasks you do repeatedly in your business
Create your first skill using "Create with Claude" (or download one from The Shelf)
Test it with real data
Set an activation command so you can invoke it instantly
Install it to your account
Build (or download) 2 more skills this week
🥭 Mango Tip: Skills are game-changers for service businesses. Imagine finishing a sales call, opening Claude, saying "proposal," dropping in the client details, and having a ready-to-send branded proposal in 30 seconds. That's what skills unlock.
8. Connectors
🔗 Connectors are the final piece that turns Claude from a standalone tool into the central hub of your entire workflow. Claude stops just writing about your tools and starts actually using them.
What Are Connectors?
Connectors let Claude talk directly to your other tools — Google Calendar, Gmail, Google Drive, Slack, and a growing list of others. From inside one Claude conversation you can:
Check your calendar
Find files in your Drive
Draft email responses
Pull Slack messages
And more — new connectors are added regularly
How to Connect a Tool
Open the sidebar
Click Customise
Go to the Connectors tab
Find the tool you want to connect
Click Connect and authorise access
Set your approval preferences (below)
Setting Approval Preferences
For each connected tool, choose how Claude handles different actions:
Always Allow — Claude does it automatically (best for read-only actions like listing events)
Needs Approval — Claude asks before acting (best for creating, editing, or deleting)
Blocked — Claude can never perform this action
Recommended setup:
✅ Listing/reading → Always Allow
⚠️ Creating/updating → Needs Approval
🚫 Deleting → Blocked or Needs Approval
Priority Connectors to Set Up
Google Calendar — check schedule, plan your week, find availability
Test it — ask Claude "What events do I have this week?"
Try combining connectors — "Check my calendar for tomorrow and draft a prep email for my 10am meeting"
🥭 Mango Tip: The real power is combining connectors with your custom instructions and projects. Claude has your context, your documents, and access to your calendar and email. That's when it stops feeling like a chatbot and starts feeling like infrastructure.
9. The Full Stack: How It All Works Together
🏗️ Here's the big picture. Each feature stacks on top of the last to create a complete AI system that works specifically for you.
The Claude Stack (Bottom to Top)
🧱
Layer 1 — Custom Instructions (your AI Operating System). Who you are, how you work, your goals, your schedule, your preferences. Claude reads this every single time.
📂
Layer 2 — Projects (your workspaces). Dedicated containers for each area of your business or life, each with its own knowledge base and instructions — layered on top of your personal ones.
⚡
Layer 3 — Skills (your automated processes). Repeatable tasks Claude runs the same way every time. Content briefs, proposals, reports, emails — trained once, used forever.
🔗
Layer 4 — Connectors (your real tools). Claude plugged into your calendar, email, drive, Slack. Not just thinking — actually doing.
🥭
Layer 5 — Agents (your ready-made shortcuts). This is the JulieMango layer: pre-built agents that bundle the instructions, skills and process for a whole job — a content engine, a sales pipeline, a finance tracker — so you start at the finish line instead of building layers 1–4 alone.
Your 30-Day Rollout
