The One Home Admin Task Worth Automating Before Any Other
By Nigel Guy · 2 min read
Home admin has a lot of candidates for automation — bills, meal planning,
scheduling, maintenance. Trying all of them at once is how most people end
up abandoning the whole effort within a month. There's a better starting
point, and it's not the flashiest one.
The rule: start with whichever recurring task currently causes the most
avoidable friction — usually the one you're most likely to forget or do
late — not the one that sounds most impressive to automate.
The mechanism
- List your actual recurring home admin tasks, honestly, including the
ones you're currently bad at.
- Identify the one with the worst track record. Not the most
time-consuming — the one you most often forget, do late, or do badly
under time pressure.
- Automate the tracking and reminding first, not the whole task. Most
home admin failure isn't inability to do the task — it's forgetting it
existed until it's urgent.
- Get one system genuinely working before adding a second. A single
reliable system beats three half-maintained ones.
- Only then expand to a second task, applying what you learned about
what actually made the first one stick.
What to skip
Skip trying to automate everything in one weekend — that burst of setup
energy rarely survives contact with an actual busy month. And skip
automating tasks you're already reliably handling well; the value is in
fixing the friction point, not in automating for its own sake.
Guardrails
- A system only helps if you actually check it — an automated reminder you
ignore is no better than no system at all, see "The Difference Between A
Reminder And A Nag."
- Some home admin genuinely benefits from a person's judgement at the
point of action (which bill to query, which maintenance issue is urgent) —
automate the tracking, keep the judgement.
- Revisit which task is "worst" periodically — once you've fixed your
biggest friction point, a different one becomes the next honest priority.
